ADHD medication in Ireland: a beginner's overview

Stimulants vs non-stimulants, how prescribing works in Ireland, and the questions worth asking.

Medication is one tool among several for adult ADHD. It works well for many people, less well for some, and isn't the right fit for everyone. This page is an educational overview — not medical advice.

Steady is coaching, not clinical care. We don't prescribe, recommend specific medications, or give individualised guidance. For that, you need a psychiatrist or GP who knows you.

What we can do is give you the lay of the land, so you walk into an appointment with better questions.

The two broad families

  • Stimulants (e.g. methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine): fast-acting, well-studied, the most common first-line treatment.
  • Non-stimulants (e.g. atomoxetine, guanfacine): slower onset, useful when stimulants aren't tolerated or appropriate.

How prescribing works in Ireland

  • Stimulants are controlled drugs (Schedule 2). Initial prescription usually from a psychiatrist.
  • Shared care: GP continues prescribing under a formal agreement with the psychiatrist.
  • GMS / DPS schemes can reduce out-of-pocket cost for medication.

What to expect in the first weeks

  • Titration: starting low, adjusting up, looking for the dose that helps without significant side effects.
  • Common adjustments: appetite, sleep, mood, blood pressure.
  • It is rarely a magic switch — most people describe 'quieter, clearer, more myself'.

Questions worth asking

  • What are the realistic benefits and risks for me specifically?
  • How will we know it's working — what are we tracking?
  • What's the plan for side effects?
  • How does this fit with the rest of my care (therapy, coaching, GP)?
